  33.      Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container.

  35. USES
  36.  
  37.      Tocainide is used to treat heart arrhythmias.  It suppresses irregular
  38. heartbeats and helps to achieve a more normal rhythm.
  39.  
  40. TREATMENT
  41.  
  42.      To decrease stomach irritation, you can take tocainide with a glass of
  43. milk or with food (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  44.      Try to take the drug at the same time(s) every day.  Tocainide works best
  45. when the amount of drug in your bloodstream is kept constant.  This medication
  46. should, therefore, be taken at evenly spaced intervals day and night.  For
  47. example, if you are to take tocainide three times per day, the doses should be
  48. spaced eight hours apart.
  49.      Try not to miss any doses of tocainide.  If you do miss a dose, take the
  50. missed dose as soon as possible.  However, if the next scheduled dose is
  51. within four hours (if you are taking tocainide three times daily) or within
  52. six hours (if you are taking it twice daily), do not take the missed dose at
  53. all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do not double the next
  54. dose.

  56. SIDE EFFECTS
  57.  
  58.      Minor.
  59.  
  60.      Abdominal pain, altered taste, anxiety, constipation, diarrhea,
  61. difficulty in swallowing, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, headache,
  62. heartburn, hot or cold feelings, increased thirst, light-headedness, loss of
  63. appetite, nausea, restlessness, sweating, or vomiting.  These side effects
  64. should disappear as your body adjusts to this medication.
  65.      If you feel dizzy or light-headed, sit or lie down for a while; get up
  66. slowly from a sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.
  67.      If you experience mouth dryness, chew sugarless gum or suck on ice chips
  68. or a piece of hard candy.
  69.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  70. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  71. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).

  75.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  76. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  77. chest pain, chills, confusion, coughing, depression, disorientation, earache,
  78. fever, hair loss, hallucinations, hearing loss, incoordination, itching, leg
  79. cramps, mental changes, mood changes, mouth sores, muscle or joint pain, neck
  80. pain, palpitations, rash, ringing in the ears, seizures, shakiness, shortness
  81. of breath, sleep disorders, slurred speech, sore throat, tingling in the
  82. fingers or toes, unsteadiness, unusual bleeding or bruising, urination
  83. problems, visual disturbances, weakness, wheezing, or yellowing of the skin or
  84. eyes.

  86. INTERACTIONS
  87.  
  88.      The concurrent use of tocainide and metoprolol can have additive negative
  89. effects on the heart.
  90.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  91. taking, especially metoprolol.
  92.  
  93. WARNINGS
  94.  
  95.      * Be sure to tell your doctor about any unusual or allergic reactions you
  96. have had to any medications, especially to tocainide or any other chemically
  97. related local anesthetic or antiarrhythmic, such as bupivacaine, dibucaine,
  98. etidocaine, lidocaine, mepivacaine, or prilocaine.
  99.      * Before starting tocainide, be sure to tell your doctor if you now have
  100. or if you have ever had blood disorders, bone marrow disease, heart block,
  101. heart failure, kidney disease, or liver disease.
  102.      * Before surgery or other medical or dental treatment, tell your doctor
  103. or dentist you are taking this drug.
  104.      * If this drug makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not take part in any
  105. activity that requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating
  106. potentially dangerous machinery.
  107.      * During the first three months of tocainide therapy, your doctor may
  108. schedule periodic blood counts.  It is important for you to have these blood
  109. tests done to monitor for possible side effects on the bone marrow.
  110.      * Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Studies in pregnant women have
  111. not been conducted.  However, adverse effects have occurred in the offspring
  112. of animals that were given large doses of tocainide.  Also, tell your doctor
  113. if you are breast-feeding an infant.  It is not yet known if tocainide passes
  114. into human breast milk.
